Inflorescence, finally finished, began seven years ago. I put it away more than once — the color and something in the marks needed to percolate until I caught up with it.
I’m always photographing botanicals on hikes and walks with our dog, Zadie — colors, structures, the way things grow. That all finds its way in to my work. The title comes from botany — the flowering structure of a plant, where timing is everything and each bloom depends on what came before.
The carved lines dig back — earlier layers show through.

New painting, just finished. Acrylic on panel, 40 x 30 inches.
I`ve been carving new patterns into my tools, and playing with opacity — how much of what`s underneath stays visible. There`s also something about speed in this one, the pace of the mark changing the quality of the line.
These paintings have always been about time for me — more than ten years of thinking about what gets held in each layer, and what`s allowed to show through. The open passages showing older layers are intentional. Swipe to see detail shots.

At the beginning of each year, I reorganize and reclaim the studio before diving into new work. After a year of transition, clearing space, rearranging plants, and bringing collected objects from beach walks, hikes, and small scientific or industrial fragments back into view feels especially grounding.
Zadie has already found the perfect warm spot under the heater.

My contribution, "Multiple Horizons", is a double-sided acrylic painting on translucent synthetic paper (14 x 11 in; framed 19 x 16 in), courtesy of @scottrichardscontemporary and exquisitely framed by @atthowefineartservices using non-glare museum glass and a floating mount that enhances the painting`s luminosity.

Large paintings in progress. The base layer is mica suspended in polymer — a luminous foundation that shifts with light and movement. It’s a subtle nod to my more atmospheric, minimal drip/poured paintings of the 2000s, now merging with the linear layering & gravity-driven processes that drive this new series.

It’s been a minute since I’ve posted, but the studio’s been anything but quiet. I’ve started new pieces, and I’ve also pulled out paintings I began years ago—ones that didn’t quite fit at the time but make sense now. That’s how it goes sometimes… a direction shows up before I’m ready to follow it. That’s where I am right now: balancing the old, the new, and the not-quite-yet.
